Product Description
Needle Bearing Eliminator for Toyota IFS (Clamshell Bushing)
As much as we love our Toyota trucks, we must admit that Tacoma IFS differentials have been problematic since the early 2000s. The 8" IFS clamshell differential in particular has frustrated owners with its vibrations and droning hums. Often, these symptoms occur in low-mileage or even brand-new trucks. The fault is due to the driver's side CV shaft differential bearing. The driver's side CV shaft enters the differential through a thin needle bearing while the passenger side uses a larger ball bearing. The weaker driver-side bearing does not handle side loads effectively. This problem is exacerbated with lifts and larger-than-stock tires. The poor factory bearing design even includes a plastic cage that can fracture into pieces, potentially damaging your spider gears.
Toyota Service Bulletin T-SB-0026-15 describes how to identify this problem in applications including 2005-2015 Tacomas, 2007-2014 FJ Cruisers and 2004-2015 4Runners. Unfortunately, Toyota technicians will generally recommend replacing the factory bearing with a new "stronger" needle bearing that is almost identical to the original and has been known to suffer from the same issues. This Clamshell Needle Bearing Eliminator is the best way to correct the faulty design and eliminate its weakness for good. Made from Teflon impregnated and lined sintered bronze, this bushing provides almost 10mm longer contact surface length to eliminate side load deflection. With a durable SAE 1020 steel backing, this fix should outlast the lifetime of your CV joints.
Applications:
- Toyota 7.5" IFS Differentials
- Toyota 8" IFS Clamshell Differentials
TECH NOTE: The T7.5 bushing is longer than the stock needle bearing. There is room for the bushing to install flush without hitting the spider gear, however some of the toyota carriers are not bored straight through and there is a ridge on the inside. The ridge will stop the bushing from seating flush. Installed height is between .030-.065 off of the carrier bore as acceptable. The bushing can be driven past the ridge of you hit it hard enough but it will damage the bushing and cause the CV shaft not install properly. Drive bushing in to carrier with even firm blows once you feel it stop verify height is between .030 -.065
